Coordination in Hinterland Transport Chains: a Major Challenge for the Seaport Community

چکیده
A variety of different firms, such as shipping lines, terminal operating companies, forwarders, hinterland transport providers and inland terminal operators are involved in hinterland transport. Besides such private companies, different public actors, such as the port authority, customs and infrastructure managers are involved as well. Coordination between all these actors is required to create effective hinterland transport chains. Nevertheless, coordination in hinterland chains does not develop spontaneously. This may be explained by free riding problems, a lack of contractual relations, information-asymmetry, and a lack of incentives for cooperation. Benefits of more effective coordination include better planning at terminals, scale economies in hinterland services, more reliable services and better utilization of transport equipment. Firms have created ‘coordination arrangements’ to improve coordination in hinterland chains. Some of these arrangements were highly successful, while others failed. This paper analyzes coordination problems in hinterland chains of seaports and different arrangements to solve these problems. The most relevant coordination problems in hinterland chains of seaports are discussed. Based on insights from institutional economics, four main categories of solutions to solve coordination problems are identified: introduction of incentives, creation of an interfirm alliance, changing the scope or the organization and collective action. An analysis is made of a huge number of coordination arrangements from inland container transport from and to the port of Rotterdam, to better understand how coordination problems can be solved.

Optimal shipping routes and vessel size for intermodal barge transport with empty container repositioning
Despite the growing role of barge transportation in the hinterland access of major seaports in Northwestern Europe, service network design for intermodal barge transportation has received little research attention. In this paper, a decision support model for service network design in intermodal barge transportation is presented. The model determines optimal shipping routes for roundtrip service...
متن کاملMaritime Ports and Inland Interconnections: a Transactional Analysis of Container Barge Transport in France
Recent research on maritime ports hinterlands points out the relevance of mass ground transport modes such as barge transport for enormous flows of containers to and from harbours, especially when a maritime port is located at the mouth of a river. Though, the modal share of container barge transport in French maritime ports (9% of TEU in Le Havre and 5% in Marseille in 2007) is significantly l...
متن کاملA Novel Method for Measuring the Quality of Temporal Integration in Public Transport Systems
Temporal coordination of services, as a crucial aspect of integration in public transport systems, has always been a big concern for transit planners and schedulers. One of the major issues in the way of coordinating transit services is the lack of a robust measure of effectiveness for assessing the quality of temporal coordination in public transport systems. Even though the network-wide summa...

We have investigated structure and electronic properties of Au and Si liner chains using the firstprinciplesplane wave pseudopotential method. The transport properties and conductance of these twoliner chains are studied using Landauer approaches based on density functional theory (DFT). Weobtain density of states and band gap using Kohn-Sham and Wannier functions as well as quantumconductivity...
متن کاملStandardization and Integration of Information Flow along the Maritime Transport Chain – Analysis of the Port of Hamburg and Its Hinterland Ransportation by Rail Using Business Process Modeling Notation
Container flows in the hinterland of maritime transport chains are implemented using coordinated logistics processes, which are dependent upon information exchanges between various actors. To be effective and efficient, these logistics processes require a seamless information flow between these actors. However, this does not always occur with hinterland transportation by rail, as is shown by Al...
